READ
WEEKEND REFLECTION
One of the many stand-out stories in this week’s readings is in Genesis 25:29-34. In this passage, we learn a lot about the characters of both Esau and Jacob, and none of it positive.
Esau treated his birthright flippantly, selling it for a single meal. The writer of Hebrews speaks of this in frank terms in Hebrews 12:15-17. Esau’s actions were unholy! He despised his birthright. He did not trust in the promises of God. He allowed his feelings and impulses and his perceived immediate needs to govern his actions.
We know, of course, that God was providentially moving through this and all the other drama between Jacob and Esau to bring about his will (see Romans 9:10-13).
Even so, may we not follow Esau’s example! It is easy to let our immediate concerns, or our present crisis, govern our actions. Instead, we are called to trust in the Lord. Do not despise your birthright!
PRAY
Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer. Here's a helpful pattern to follow (ACTS):
- ADORATION - Praise God for all that he is and all that he had done.
- CONFESSION - Confess your sins to God and trust in the finish work of Christ. Thank him for his forgiveness.
- THANKSGIVING - Thank God for all the many blessings and graces he has shown you.
- SUPPLICATION - Ask your heavenly Father to supply your needs.
