What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

The word “gospel” comes to us from the Greek word euangelion, which means “good news.” So, we could we simply say “The gospel is good news!” However, without further context or clarification this will raise other questions such as, “About what or whom is this good news?" or "What makes this news so good?". Below is a summary of important truths from Scripture that explain why this "good news" is so good!

GOD

God, who is perfect, righteous, and holy, and just, created us for his own glory, and we are accountable to him.

See: Leviticus 19:2, Psalm 18:30, Deuteronomy 32:4, Isaiah 6:3, Isaiah 43:7, Romans 14:12, Matthew 12:36-37

MAN

We have all sinned against God, broken his commandments, and we continuously fall short of his glory. We have all rebelled against him and rejected his authority over us. Because of this, we justly deserve death and eternal judgement.

See: Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:23, Romans 1:18-32, Romans 6:23

CHRIST

God being gracious and merciful, has provided the Way for sinners like us to be reconciled to himself. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ (God in the flesh) to save fallen sinners. Jesus lived a sinless life and died on the cross, taking the punishment for sinners. On the third day he rose from the grave, defeating sin, and death, and hell for all who believe. He ascended to Heaven where he is now seated at God the Father’s right hand.

See: Ephesians 2:4-5, Titus 3:4-5, John 3:16, 1 Timothy 1:15, 2 Corinthians 5:19, 1 Peter 2:22, Isaiah 53:5, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Ephesians 1:20-21, Hebrews 1:3

FAITH

All who come to Jesus Christ by faith alone, repenting of their sins and believing in his perfect sacrifice, trusting him and no one else for salvation, are justified (declared righteous) before God, adopted into his family, and are no longer under judgment for their sins. Jesus has promised to return one day and reign forever in the fullness of his kingdom with all those who have believed in Him.

See: Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8-9, Acts 3:19, Romans 3:24, Galatians 4:4-7, Romans 8:1, John 5:24, Revelation 22:20, Revelation 11:15
