Weekend Reflection

Many people consider Habakkuk 3:17-19 one of the greatest passages in the Old Testament. This passage is the culminating passage of Habakkuk, which is a book full of difficulties and lament. The prophet proclaims:

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.”

Note two important words: ‘though’ and ‘yet’. He says ‘though’ not ‘if’ and that seems to indicate that these are certain expectations (the certainty of suffering). And ‘yet’! Even though those things will happen, “I will rejoice in the Lord and take joy in the God of my salvation.” Certain trials, and the Prophet’s certain response. And all because his joy is “tethered”, not to circumstances, but to the Lord is his strength. Let Habakkuk encourage your heart today.

PRAY

Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Pray that God would keep you from sin and guard you from the temptations of the world. Ask God to help you be a witness for Christ in the midst of an evil and sinful world and that he would use you to tell others who are lost about Christ. Ask him to renew your mind daily that you would be captivated by the beauty of Christ above all earthly things.

You can also take some time bring these things before the Lord.

  • Confess your sins.
  • The Lost
  • The Church
  • Your Needs

your life. Ask him to guard you against the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world.
