READ
Weekend Reflection
On Saturday we read the amazing (and true!) story of the prophet Jonah. From beginning to end, the book is about two very different postures towards sinful people. Jonah, the prophet, does not want to go to Nineveh because he does not want them to hear the Word of the Lord. What if they repent? He was sure God would show him mercy (see Jonah 4:2).
God is completely just and the sins of the city have not escaped his notice. That is why he sends Jonah with a word of warning. And when Jonah tries to dodge God on this, he colorfully redirects him back toward Nineveh in one of the most famous events of the Old Testament.
When Jonah finally does preach to the people there, his fears materialize. The people repent and God shows them grace and mercy. This infuriates Jonah. How can God show them mercy?!?
Oh, Jonah, if only you could see; God has shown you mercy too!
PRAY
Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Pray that God would keep you from sin and guard you from the temptations of the world. Ask God to help you be a witness for Christ in the midst of an evil and sinful world and that he would use you to tell others who are lost about Christ. Ask him to renew your mind daily that you would be captivated by the beauty of Christ above all earthly things.
You can also take some time bring these things before the Lord.
- Confess your sins.
- The Lost
- The Church
- Your Needs
your life. Ask him to guard you against the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world.
