Weekend Reflection
In Psalm 51, David makes heartfelt pleas for God’s mercy and cleansing and grace, after he had sinned grievously (adultery and murder!). David deserved judgment. And instead of making excuses for his sin, David confesses it and falls on the mercy of God. He pleads with God for restoration: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Note that what David prays in Psalm 51 can only be granted to us because of Christ. When he says, Cast me not away from your presence, we know that the only reason God does not, in fact, cast us away is because Jesus Christ has made atonement for us, and holds us, and the Spirit of God through Christ seals us and holds on to us.
What a beautiful blessing we have in Jesus! We no longer need to hide our sin and shame. We can confess it to God and trust him, through the work of Christ, to forgive us and cleanse us; to never cast us away, and to restore to us the joy of his salvation.
PRAY
Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer using part of The Lord's Prayer as a model.
"AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL." - Seek God's guidance in every aspect of your life. Ask him to guard you against the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world.
