Weekend Reflection
“As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you.” -Jeremiah 44:16
Sin is a very dangerous thing. It corrupts everything about how we reason and think and even prevents us from hearing sound counsel (or divine warnings!). Sin, as many have said, makes us dumb. You can see that so clearly in Jeremiah 44. The people dig their heels in and refuse to forsake their idolatry. They pay no attention to the words of the prophet (who spoke in the name of the Lord). In verses 17-18, they even argue that they had it better when they freely indulged in their sin – so they will not hear the warnings. They would not listen, even though judgment was on its way.
What got the people to this point? In a word: sin. Perhaps it began as small idolatrous compromises, which grew into all-encompassing sin, which led, in the end to their complete downfall. And that is how sin works. Jeremiah 44 is a great how-not-to lesson. Let’s hear it! Sin makes us dumb.
PRAY
Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer using part of The Lord's Prayer as a model.
"AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL." - Seek God's guidance in every aspect of your life. Ask him to guard you against the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world.
