READ
Weekend Reflection
We read last week of the sacking of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, the execution of Zedekiah’s sons before his own eyes, and the carrying off into captivity of most of the rest. It was a dark day for the Hebrew people. God’s judgment had come.
Lamentations is Jeremiah’s great lament for all of this. With these five poems, we see his raw grief over his kinsman for God’s judgment upon them. Again, it was a dark day. But all was not lost.
In Lamentations we encounter some of the most hopeful words in the Bible. Right in the middle of an extended expression of grief, we have these precious words: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.””
Marvel this weekend in God’s steadfast love and unending mercy, even in the midst of judgment. What a picture of the Gospel!
PRAY
Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer using part of The Lord's Prayer as a model.
"AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL." - Seek God's guidance in every aspect of your life. Ask him to guard you against the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world.
