READ
Weekend Reflection
Judgment against sin is a major theme of the book of Jeremiah. Reading this amazing book leaves us with a sobering sense of God’s anger that is stirred up against sin, especially the sin of idolatry. It is a fearful thing to be a subject of God’s wrath! Yet, as sobering as the book is, Jeremiah is not without hope. In fact, no sooner do we read of God’s judgment do we see his mercy. We read an example of this just this week. Jeremiah 31:13 says: I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
God is just and all sin receives punishment. There is real mourning for the sinner! Yet, God is merciful and gracious. He turns our mourning into joy. This is the gospel. He justly judges our sin in Christ. That is what the cross is all about. And God turns our mourning into joy in him, as we receive his righteousness and forgiveness through Jesus.
Rejoice this weekend in God’s mercy for you in Jesus Christ.
