WEEKEND REFLECTION
We are embarking through the amazing book of Ecclesiastes! The “Preacher” uses the word “vanity” a lot in Ecclesiastes, and his aim is to describe the fleeting quality of our existence. The Hebrew word for “vanity” can also be translated as “vapor” or “breath,”. The Preacher is emphasizing how quickly life passes by.
It's Fall, and already on some cool mornings you can see your breath. It is a whisp, and then it is gone. This is how the Bible describes our lives. We are here for a moment, and then we are gone. This realization can be sobering, but it also brings clarity and purpose.
When we understand this, we stop looking for meaning in the temporary pleasures or successes of this life, but in our immutable God who is the same for eternity. He is no mere whisp.
That should motivate us to redeem the time and make the most of every opportunity; to love deeply, and live faithfully, knowing that our true home is with God and our true meaning is found in Jesus Christ. Lord, help us to number our days!
PRAY
Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer. Here's a helpful pattern to follow (ACTS):
- ADORATION - Praise God for all that he is and all that he had done.
- CONFESSION - Confess your sins to God and trust in the finish work of Christ. Thank him for his forgiveness.
- THANKSGIVING - Thank God for all the many blessings and graces he has shown you.
- SUPPLICATION - Ask your heavenly Father to supply your needs.
