Job 19

WEEKEND REFLECTION

“Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?” -Job

This is Job’s big questions during his suffering, and the question many Christians have asked throughout history. Why do the wicked often prosper and the righteous often suffer?

Job’s “friends” didn’t think it was so. Their main argument was that Job must have done something wrong for all the calamity to come upon him. The wicked suffer, the righteous flourish – this is the theology of Job’s friends. A theology which is debunked by the Book of Job.

So why does God allow wicked people to sometimes flourish? We don’t know all his reasons. But we do know that they only flourish for a season. Just as the suffering of the righteous is “but for a moment”. God’s justice is perfect! The wicked will face his perfect justice. And God is rich in mercy towards those who trust in him. Job learned this in his own experience of suffering and salvation. God was good to Job. He is good to you too!

PRAY

Take some time to commune with the Lord in prayer. Here's a helpful pattern to follow (ACTS):

  • ADORATION - Praise God for all that he is and all that he had done.
  • CONFESSION - Confess your sins to God and trust in the finish work of Christ. Thank him for his forgiveness.
  • THANKSGIVING - Thank God for all the many blessings and graces he has shown you.
  • SUPPLICATION - Ask your heavenly Father to supply your needs.
