WEEKEND REFLECTION
“It is not for you to know… but you will be my witnesses…” -Acts 1:7-8. We have begun to work our way through the book of Acts. What a wonderful and encouraging account of God’s faithfulness to the church.
Right in the very beginning of Luke’s account, Jesus gives a helpful (then and now) clarification as to where our focus should be as Christians. The apostles asked Jesus when the kingdom will be restored to Israel. They were asking a specific question about the end of the age.
Jesus’ response is so helpful. He said, “it is not for you to know…” It is in God’s purview to know the timing of this, and his alone. And he redirected their attention. “You will be my witnesses.”
There are many mysteries that yet remain; many things the Lord has not yet revealed to us. He has told us our mission though. Some things, perhaps, are “not for us to know”. But we do know that we are to be his witnesses. Let’s not lose sight of that!
SUNDAY SERMON
The sermon for Sunday, August 10, is on Nehemiah 8. To prepare your heart for the preaching of God’s Word, it would be good to read this chapter before the gathering.
FAITH GROUPS
- Why is teaching the Bible (not just reading it) important in the life of the church (see v.8)?
- What does it mean to “bless the Lord”?
- Why did the reading of God’s Law result in weeping?
- How can the joy of the Lord be our strength?
- The people went from weeping to joy in Nehemiah 8, all in response to God’s Word. Are there times the Word makes us weep, and then joyful? Discuss this.
