WEEKEND REFLECTION
We read Psalm 32 on Wednesday (a Psalm that fits right into next week’s sermon!). In that psalm, David declares, “Blessed (or ‘Happy” is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.”
Happy indeed! All those who understand the holiness of God and our own unrighteousness know how terrible it would be to remain in our sin. Sin is like an overwhelming debt that we could never fully pay off.
But God, in his love and mercy and grace, sent the Son of God to pay that sin debt in our place, by his atoning work on the cross. And all who trust in Jesus Christ are forgiven in his name.
Oh, happy day! We are forgiven; our sins are covered. God has been merciful to us.
Ponder that a while this weekend. Ponder until your heart sings with joy. Until your heart is happy!
SUNDAY SERMON
The sermon for Sunday, August 17 is on Nehemiah 9-10. Please read this chapter before the gathering to prepare you for the hearing of God’s Word.
FAITH GROUPS
- What is confession, and why is it necessary?
- Nehemiah 8 recounted the reading and responding to God’s Word. And chapter 9 is about confession. What part does God’s Word play in the confession of sin?
- Consider 1 John 1:5-10. What does this teach us about confession, and NOT confessing our sins?
- What part does the church play in confession?
- What are some ways we can apply this in our lives, practically speaking.
