Bible Readings: August 5-11

Faith Bible Readings 2019

At Faith Baptist Fellowship, we Love God’s Word and Prayer (Ephesians 6:17-18)! Take the ‘sword of the Spirit’ (God’s Word) and persevere in prayer! In this year, ask God each day to speak directly to you from the Scripture portions you read. Select a quiet place and consistent time to read and pray.

Our plan for 2019 will be similar to previous years with one exception. Monday-Saturday we will focus on one main devotional passage; the additional readings will keep you on track to finish the entire Bible in one year. On Sunday, we will have a passage from the upcoming Sunday sermon along with questions for Faith Group discussion. In addition, we will include a “One Another” passage also for Faith Group discussion and personal application in caring for one another in the body of Faith.

We suggest having a notebook and pen for answering questions and recording your thoughts/insights. Bring this notebook with you to Faith Group for discussions and prayer times.

MONDAY, AUGUST 5

Read Proverbs 5

TAI: Within sinful man there is a continuum to sin, and one thing that hasn’t changed is immoral behavior. Here a father implores his son, listen up! Here’s what to watch for, guard your body and heart, don’t fall for it! When the hormones race, don’t be stupid and have regrets later on. From verse 15 on, the Father gives the way of God’s blessing: Pleasures found in a committed relationship between a man and a woman as God intended. Throughout this passage it harkens, stay on the right path! Don’t get sucked in by the culture’s beliefs when you find yourself trapped, where sin holds you until death.

PP: Father God, your instruction to us comes from your love for us. May we receive strength and clear eyes to stay pure in this world where your gift of sexuality has been so distorted and cheapened. We confess to you our failures and claim your grace to continue your redeeming work in us. We are given rich blessings in you.  Amen.

Additional readings: Luke 14:15-24; 1 Timothy 3:11-16; Ezra 7

TUESDAY, AUGUST 6

Read Proverbs 5 (Part 2)

TAI: The language in this chapter is both descriptive and graphic. One can relate, a smooth-talking saleslady once talked me into buying $150 of cosmetics for my wife. I just couldn’t say no. She had me at hello. What could I have done? The answer is in verse 8, stay far from her! Instead it cost me. Every time I saw those bottles on the vanity, I thought of my failure to say no! Yes, this passage is about much more weighty temptation, but the hidden message is, “This will be what you need!” Sounds like a lie right from Eden doesn’t it? Instead, consider the gift of blessing of what you have in your spouse. A life-giver that you can be delighted with. Be delighted also with God, for He knows our ways.

PP: God our Creator, open our eyes to temptation’s attempts, that we may flee from them. Discipline us when we are on the wrong path, that we might know you truly love us. Bless our relationships as husband and wife, that we give you glory for these priceless gifts you gave us. Strengthen our hearts and minds to say no to sin. Amen.

Additional readings:  Luke14:25-35; 1 Timothy 4; Ezra 8

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7

Read Proverbs 6:1-11

TAI: “I owe, I owe, its off to work I go.” The lesson today is about fiduciary responsibility. Dave Ramsey has made it a life mission to live biblically, financially wise. One of his favorite verses is verse 5, “save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter.” He is not saying run from your creditors, but don’t get into a position where you are the hunted! Solomon cautions us about the easy way out, instead, man up, talk to your creditor, rise early, get to work, be intentional in your planning for the future. Remember to praise God and be thankful for those lean times His provision was enough, also to share the blessing of abundance.

PP: Jesus, we are in debt to You. Our sinfulness to You, You redeem and exchange it for righteousness. You stamp on our souls, PAID IN FULL. We pray Lord that as we live, we reflect on our dependence on You. You are our provider. Give us discipline and strength to do our jobs well, wisdom how to conduct our spending, and contentment that comes from serving You.  Amen.

Additional Readings:  Luke 15:1-10; 1 Timothy 5:1-15; Ezra 9

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8

Read Proverbs 6:12-19

TAI: Let’s get something straight, yes God is love, but God also hates! There are actions that are an abomination to him. As I read this, my mind immediately went to the pro-choice movement, the abortion industry. The lies that your career is more important than a child’s life, that this isn’t really a life but tissue, it’s not really a big thing, 4 out of 10 women have had one, numbers wouldn’t mislead you, would they? We providers do this as a service, not for the money. Lies. Deceit. Lies!! These are abominations! When wicked hearts devise evil. In verse 15, it tells us that disaster and judgment will come upon them. It closes in verse 19 with a final abomination. Discord, division among the brothers. The church should not be divided by a moral issue as this. May we be aware of the battle of spiritual forces raging, that we may stand firm for truth.

PP: Heavenly Father, you are the giver of life, what a precious gift. We stand as a nation that has traded truth for lies, we so need to confess our sinfulness in broken and contrite heart. As it says in John 10:10, “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Thank you, Lord, for new life with blessings!  Amen.

Additional Readings:   Luke 15:11-32; 1 Timothy 5:16-25; Ezra 10

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9

Read Proverbs 7

TAI: Sexual sin is not as glamorous as it would have itself appear. Oh, it puts on a good front by being enticing and convincing and presents a great sales pitch. I am reminded of a vacation we took to the Black Hills. We wanted to stop at a car museum which happened to be in a casino in Deadwood. Driving down Main Street, the casino storefronts were flashy, inviting. They screamed, “come on in!” Realizing I had driven a block too far for the museum, we did a return loop via the alley behind the stores. What a different picture. Broken down, ill-kept, dark and foreboding… evil??!! Such is the description of this passage.

PP: Lord God, as man was deceived by his eyes and by smooth talk in the garden so long ago, may we have vision of what truth is. May our lives be pure and acceptable unto you as it says in Romans 12:1-2, that we are living sacrifices to you. Give us strength to hold fast! Amen.

Additional Readings:   Luke 16:1-9; 1 Timothy 6:1-10; Nehemiah 1-2

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10

Read Proverbs 8

TAI: The political debates have now begun. All the sound bites, raised voices, gesticulations, smirks and platitudes are now shared from the soap box. One must ask, how does this compare to this chapter? The voice of this chapter is a grandma-type figure, something like a respected queen, with a pure heart and concern for her people. She says I will lead by example, for I am wisdom. You want to accumulate something of great wealth? A promised inheritance? Favor from the Lord? Keep God’s ways be teachable, value and protect wisdom. This is something we will not vote on, but certainly decide on.

PP: Lord, we read so much about the folly of man in these books of Proverbs. We are numbed by the news and newspapers of man’s lack of wisdom. Raise our awareness of finding and listening to you for wisdom in our day-to-day lives wherever we are. Thank you for calling us your sons as a loving father would do and giving us a blessing. Amen.

Additional Readings:  Luke 16:10-18; 1 Timothy 6:11-21; Nehemiah 3
